Nutritional Benefits of Sourdough + at-home recipes!

Writer's picture: Carli ColeCarli Cole

Wow y'all has it been awhile. I swear March and April are always the busiest months of the year. I have also been busy baking loaves for you all, which I have loved! Huge thanks to everyone who has bought, and shared your love for them. It's been so fun seeing y'all incorporate them in your meals.

Now lets talk about the nutritional value of including this naturally leavened bread in your diet, over store-bought, baker's yeast bread. Not only is it easier to digest for people who are sensitive to gluten, and it is baker yeast-free. So people with yeast allergies can eat it! It has natural, wild yeast the starter catches from the air, but this is rare for people to be allergic to it. (I am sure there is someone out there who is) It is also a rich source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Sourdough is known to be the best bread for diabetics (AKA Carson) and less likely to spike blood sugar like other breads. So not only is it super tasty, but it is so good for you. Plus- it is one of the oldest forms of leavened bread, dating back to the Egyptians in 1500 B.C. So cool right?

Recipes:

I wanted to share a few things of what myself and others, make with our loaves!

Sandwich bread: *A Carson favorite* Heat up the cast iron and toast sliced sourdough with some butter. I lay the deli turkey meat on the iron to get it hot and a little crispy, then lay my cheese on the iron for a few seconds to melt it. Add some spinach, garlic salt, and squish together. SO yummy and easy. I have a few clips of me making this on my "sourdough" highlight on Instagram.

Croutons: The "butts" are perfect for making croutons. Slice them into cubes, load with olive oil, garlic salt and/or seasonings of your choice. Broil until crunchy! So good and last as a snack the next day too :)

Crackers for your charcuterie board: Just like the croutons, but slice into bigger pieces. Top with cream cheese and Raspberry Chipotle Sauce or with your favorite cheese and prosciutto.

Happening soon: chocolate sourdough with ice cream-YES.

sweet honey sourdough as a side with steak, shrimp or hamburger buns.

cinnamon sugar sourdough warmed with butter for breakfast on the go.

Hamburger buns, avocado toast and added side to roast, from Shawn Parks! So yummy.

And last one: ale carte. Had more than a few people tell me they eat it with both hands-there are no rules with sourdough!!

Thank y'all so much for all the love and kind words I have received. Y'all are my biggest motivation-for real!

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Galatians 6:9
